TZEDAKAH

What is Tzedakah?

Tzedakah (pronunced tza’da‘kah) is commonly translated as ‘charitable giving’ – that which is given as financial aid, above and beyond one’s usual giving. The deeper meaning, from a Hebraic perspective, is to bring blessing to others in a spirit of love.

IMG_0722

Every little bit helps! Since the establishment of the modern State of Israel, almost every Jewish home in the Diaspora [outside of Israel] has had a “blue box”  for collecting small change, or Shabbat tzedakah, which then was collected by the JNF (Jewish National Fund – Keren Kayemet L’Yisrael) for helping the early pioneers, most of whom arrived with little or nothing, to build up the Land of Israel.

IMG_0721

These small boxes, filled by hearts that looked with hope to the longed-for homeland, played a truly great part in the restoration and transformation of an uncared for, desolate land, comprised of stoney ground, desert or swamps, to the vital and flourishing Land we see today.
The significant work of the JNF continues to this day to further the much needed building and restoration of Israel.

We cannot outgive God, who is the great Giver.
